Where it all started

In January 1992, Philip Smith was working with a large pest control firm as the primary means to support his young family. Because of his love for the outdoors and agriculture coupled with his desire to serve people, he began to see pest control as his passion. What could be more important than protecting homes from wood destroying pests and disease causing insects and rodents?

Clayton Smith, Philip’s father, was a middle school and high school science teacher, who instilled in him a love for life, agriculture, and an appreciation for the environment. “On our small family farm, Dad taught me at an early age to do things right the first time,” Philip says. “Mom and Dad taught my siblings and me to be respectful of people’s property and always do the right thing.”

Compass’s path to growth in Georgia & South Carolina

In November of 1995, after obtaining a degree in Business Administration / Marketing, Philip opened Compass Pest Management in Greenville, SC. Remembering the words of his father, Philip and his wife Lisa agreed it was time to start a pest control firm placing an emphasis on great customer service. This basic principle has taken Compass from a one-man operation to over 30 employees. Compass currently serves three locations: Greenville, SC, Anderson, SC, and Cornelia, GA.

Initially, the new thriving pest control firm exclusively offered pest and moisture control. In 1996, Philip brought his former supervisor and mentor on board to help expand the service offering to include termite control throughout upstate South Carolina.

In March of 2002, after building a strong presence in Greenville, SC, Compass expanded to Cornelia, GA to serve northeast Georgia. Compass initially began serving the local residential community and quickly moved into commercial and industrial pest control including health care clinics, hospitals, nursing and assisted living facilities, restaurants, banks, and a host of other commercial establishments.

Over its 20+ years in business, Compass has been an award-winning service provider in both Georgia and South Carolina. In 2004, Compass founder and President, Philip Smith was named Pest Management Professional of the year by the South Carolina Pest Control Association. More recently, Compass was voted “Best Pest Control Service” by the readers of “The Northeast Georgian” newspaper in Cornelia, GA.

Where are we now?

Today, Compass Pest Management is the pest control firm of choice for thousands of residents in South Carolina and Georgia. In addition to providing excellence in pest control, Compass Pest Management and its employees have served the communities in upstate South Carolina and Northeast Georgia by helping mentor young people, training prison inmates to interview for jobs upon release, and working with local Rotary clubs in awarding scholarships to local high school students.
